Paul van Dyk - 'The Sun After Heartbreak' feat. Sue McLaren & Arty
Relative to some of the other tracks on the album, 'The Sun After Heartbreak' took quite a long time to produce. Arty and I went into the composing phase on it and basically came up with something that was very straight, beats at 132bpm, with a kind of progressive house lean to it. As we got further into it, I started to see that if could work better as something much more 'lifty' and at that point we changed its direction and put a lot more momentum and drive behind it. So with the tempo rise, we began to test the drum&bass elements and felt that those really popped too. From its initial start point to where it is now, its pretty much changed out of all recognition.
Sue, I think, is one of the best new vocalists to come along in the intervening time between 'Evolution' and 'In Between'. I just really, really love her voice. I'd been working with her on a different track, but one that was in the same key and one day I had this flash of inspiration, tried them together, and the synergy that was happening between them became really compelling.
The vocal itself was one of the most extensive, intricate vocal productions I've ever worked on, too. It was done, I think, over close to 50 channels on the mixing desk. When you listen to it closely, every element of it is chopped up and broken down into tiny little pieces, so that every little 'hoooh' and 'hah' could be spaced out to enhance the feel of the track and give it that really warm, close effect.
Paul van Dyk 'THE SUN AFTER HEARTBREAK' ft. Arty and Sue McLaren From the album EVOLUTION
It's the start of a new day But everything feels over Your sky a shade of grey Longing for some colour
If you ever see the sun after heartbreak Lift your head up Take a breath in, oh Though your heart may come undone A change is coming Just remember it's not over
Just remember As the sun shines on your skin Let it sink in Just remember it's not over
It's the start of a new day Weight is on your shoulders You can wipe those tears away As sunlight washes over
If you ever see the sun Lift your head up Take a breath in, oh Though your heart may come undone Just remember it's not over
If you ever see the sun after heartbreak Just remember it's not over
