And their collaboration with Jason Chance “Got to be Strong” held firm of 8 weeks at #2 on the Beatport House chart.
In 2013 they deejayed in Japan, Russia, Canada, Indonesia, Barbados, UK, Europe. People all over the world love these guys!
Interviewer: Where in the world are you right now?
My Digital Enemy: We are in sunny Brighton, just down the road from the studio!
Interviewer: A big couple of weeks for you with the release of your latest track “Shamen”…it’s doing all the right things in the Buzz and Beatport charts. Tell us the history of this cracking new tune that has kick started 2014 in a proper fashion…
MDE: Yes, it is a great start to 2014! We could not be happier! We wrote “Shamen” especially for our deep / tech label Vudu. It is the first My Digital Enemy track on the label, up until now we have released most of our tracks on our house label Zulu. We decided to do something a bit different. It was great to see it in the DMC Buzz Chart, a first for Vudu Records and it has entered the Beatport Tech House Top 10 today.
Interviewer: The tune has rightly so received loads of support from many of our major players around the world. Who are some of the names you enjoy seeing support your music when a new tune drops…who are the producers playing your music that makes you feel happy?
MDE: Being from the UK, Radio 1 airplay always does it for us! It is great when Pete Tong & Danny Howard drop our tracks. Fatboy Slim is another DJ Hero of ours. Ever since his first party on Brighton beach in 2001 we have followed his music and it always feels great when he spins our tracks.
Interviewer: Can you remember where you first road tested the track?
MDE: It was New Year’s Eve in Edmonton, Canada and the place went bonkers!
Interviewer: Your 2014 diary is already littered with far-flung trips to Slovenia and Canada whilst last year saw you smash the living daylights out of clubs in such out of the way places as Novosibirsk in Russia and Bandung in Indonesia. But what was the most surreal experience you had DJing last year?
MDE: Getting paid to have a four day holiday in Barbados at an all-inclusive resort that led straight on onto a picturesque unspoiled beach was pretty surreal. We were thinking...seriously, we are getting paid for this!
Interviewer: Your story begins way back, friends for years raving under canvas and out in the fields to the likes of The Prodigy. Where were the big events and who were the DJs you were following back then?
MDE: Fatboy Slim, Carl Cox and The Prodigy were our favourites back then and to be honest, not much has changed. We went to some great events raving...Dance Valley in Holland, Nature 1 in Germany, Creamfields and of course SW4 which we still go to every year. Ibiza is another story; so many good memories…
Interviewer: The next step in the story is when you set up your own hard house label, what made you want to start a label in the first place?
MDE: At that time, we were working with Nukleuz, Tidy Trax and Kaktai. We had released a fair few records and the next step was starting a label to release our tracks. It also helped that we both worked in London next door to a record pressing factory. We used to head over in our lunch hour to check out the test pressings or order the next batch of vinyl. The guys there were really cool and always sorted us out some really cheap cash deals!
Interviewer: The hard house scene was looked down at by many, but the scene has produced so many big producers that are seriously ripping it up today. Why do you think it got so much bad press?
MDE: Hard house is a scene that is quite stuck in its ways. There is not much room for it to evolve. The plus side of this is it is a great launch pad for a producer starting on the ladder. It is one of the easier scenes to get into and you do not have to be the best producer in the world to write a banging hard house track. The fact so many Hard House producers from when we were doing it are doing so well now just proves that!
Interviewer: Was music always going to be the choice of career for you two or during school days were there other opportunities?
MDE: We were both massively into music throughout school and college but it did not seem like it would ever be a job. It was just something we loved being involved in, whether it was going to gigs (yes we were both rockers at college), playing in bands, or just listening to our Walkman in class when we were meant to be working! I always thought I would be a graphic designer. I think Kieron knew he would be working in music but at that time, he was a guitarist. It was not until around the year 2000 when we both bought Akai S2000 samplers learnt how to use them and started bashing out some seriously dirty beats that everything changed.
Interviewer: What did your families think of your choice of eventual careers?
MDE: Luckily, we are both from really supportive families so there was never any pressure to 'get a real job'.
Interviewer: 2003 saw you two take a new slant on things when you started writing house music together. What was that whole experience like; did you find it a simple development?
MDE: In 2003 we decided to write our first trance track. We sampled the theme from the film “The Lost Boys”. It went on to be Judge Jules's most requested track of 2003 and charted at 21 in the national charts. After that we wrote quite a few trance records and did a load of remixes. Our first house track was another bootleg, this time “Boy Meets Girl”, “Waiting For A Star To Fall”. Our version got signed to Sony Records and got to number 3 in the national charts. It also hit number 1 in the UK radio playlist chart with all the major stations playing it. Not bad for our first stab at a house track!
Interviewer: Tell us about you two in the studio, who excels in what department?
MDE: Kieron is really great at writing melodies. He is a classically trained guitarist and really knows his music theory. I am the technical whizz who spends hours mastering production skills. We both cross over into each other’s domains but it’s a great combination and we have been working together so long that we make a really great team.
Interviewer: When was the last time you had a massive fuck off argument about music?
MDE: Haha. We are both pretty calm people (when sober) so it’s more likely we would have an argument at a gig!
You spend so much time with each other, traveling, working and playing. What is each other’s’ most annoying habit?
Serg – “Kieron's ability to drink the entire drinks rider before I even get to the club!”
Kieron – “Serg's snoring on planes just has to stop.”
Interviewer: What is the current top 10 you are spinning…
1. My Digital Enemy - Shamen
2. Milk & Sugar - Tell Me Why (My Digital Enemy Remix) [MILK & SUGAR]
3. Pagano & Reza - Turn Up The Music [ZULU]
4. Matt Caseli, Olic, Maliblue - Chase The Sun [ZULU]
5. Danny Blaze - Blow Ya Speakerz (Clavertron Remix) [HIJACKED]
6. Ramiro Lopez & Coyu - Y.E.A.H [SUARA]
7. Sonny Wharton - Pandemonium [SKINT]
8. DJ PP - Groove You (1977 Mix) [PP MUSIC]
9. Jay Lumen - Where Is The Beat [100% PURE]
10. Prok & Fitch - Dope Drop [TOOLROOM]
Interviewer: Who are the producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?
MDE: Prok & Fitch are good friends of ours and their sound is really unique. We’re also loving Sonny Wharton’s new tracks with the old school vibes. We rarely play a set without dropping a Jay Lumen track; we love all the old school speed garage vibes he injects into his tracks.
Interviewer: What inspired you to start Zulu Records?
MDE: Really it was the frustration of labels continuously moving their schedules around. We would do our best to plan our releases so one would come out each month. The labels would move the dates at the last minute and you would end up with a month with no new track out then two coming out on the same day. The great thing about having our own label is we can now set our own release dates. It is great that the label has built up so nicely. Considering Zulu is less than two years old it's come along way!
Interviewer: What is coming out next on the release tip from you and the label?
MDE: The current Zulu release Pagano & Reza – “Turn Up The Music” is definitely worth checking out, it’s a bass line house track with old school elements. Next up is a collaboration between us and Jason Chance, the follow-up to last years “Feel It In The Air” which hit number 3 in the Beatport House Chart! On our Deep tech label ‘Vudu', the current release is our track “Shamen” which has just broken the Beatport Tech House top 10. Coming next we have an awesome track from Emsekay called “Searchin”. It has a really nice, deep melodic vibe. We are also currently working on a new My Digital Enemy track for the forthcoming Toolroom Miami 2014 compilation.
Interviewer: Who is the most exciting new DJ you have seen recently?
MDE: We saw Bontan at the Toolroom party at ADE and he was playing some really cool stuff. He is definitely one to watch for 2014!
Interviewer: It may not be good for images, but MDE really love…
MDE: Eighties Music…
Interviewer: Tell us about your studio set up…
MDE: We use Cubase with a MOTU soundcard and Makie HR824 Monitors, KRK VXT8 Monitors & KRK VXT4 Monitors. We have a load of outboard gear but most of it stays in the cupboard now. Today’s plugins are amazing. We love Massive, Trilian, Sausage Fattener, The Waves plugins...we also use Loopmasters sample packs.
Interviewer: And finally, what 1 gig already in your diary for 2014 is already getting you excited…?
MDE: China!! We just had a booking for Pepper Club in Shenzhen and it will be our first time out there! We both love experiencing new cultures and testing out the local alcoholic beverages!!!
