Paul van Dyk - 'Lost In Berlin' feat. Michelle Leonard
I met Michelle through an A&R man at Universal and he introduced her as this really cool singer-songwriter. We got talking one day and were discussing various aspects of song writing, including reoccurring themes that resonate with us. Cities came up and I mentioned that I'd done 'New York City' on 'In Between' and felt a bit uncomfortable with never having done anything based around my own home city. She didn't miss a beat and said 'I know what we're doing then Paul - leave that to me'. She came back 3 or maybe 4 weeks later with this incredibly beautiful song that somehow captures the city's past/present lifeblood.
It's a tough one to describe, but with both the tone of her voice and the lyrics, it brings to mind the Berlin I remember, when I was a boy, growing up in the late 70s and 80s. The city had this imposing physical and mental façade to it, from its architecture to its citizens. There was repression of course, but always there was an underlying unconquerable spirit to it too. She somehow found the aura of all that. The lyrics are a little voyeuristic too. She's never told me exactly what they were about so of course like all songs they're open to interpretation. To me though 'Lost In Berlin' feels like it's about a relationship that may or may not make it.
Sometimes hopeful, sometimes melancholic and absorbed, and with this beautiful, slightly broken edge to it.
Paul van Dyk LOST IN BERLIN' ft. Michelle Leonard From the album EVOLUTION
Let us get lost Let us get lost Let us get lost Let us get
Painted my own shadow Living on what was borrowed Nothing was mine, nothing felt right, living their lives
You we're as lonely as I was We knew there was so much for us That what we'd lost, more than what we had, more than a lot
Come and take my hand, there are no demands, I am insecure knocking on your door
Let us get lost in Berlin Tonight As we're falling into the 4th bar Watch us get lost in Berlin Racing lights Everything's alright even If tomorrow changes it's mind
If tomorrow changes it's mind
Let us get lost in Berlin Let us get lost Let us get lost in Berlin Let us get lost in Berlin Let us get lost in Berlin
