Catch an Exclusive interview with Cazzette
Swedish duo Cazzette back on scene in 2011 with their official remix of Avicii's “Sweet Dreams”. This year they are ready surprise us with the full iTunes release of debut album “Eject”. Famous dance music ‘guru’ likes David Guetta, Tiesto and Martin Solveig respect Cazzette’s musicians. Their bass-heavy productions with elements of house, electro and dubstep always impress people!
Reporter: Hey guys, where in the world are you today?
Cazzette: Thanks! We are currently in Stockholm working on new material! It feels great taking the time to have proper studio sessions.
Reporter: A big week for you with the full iTunes release of your new album “Eject”, or should that be the first instalment as in true Cazzette edge of your seat style, the long player is to released in three parts over a period of months. We understand your manager and the Spotify big boss bumped into each other at an airport and discussed the idea in the back of a cab…but what did you think of this three pronged release schedule…?
Cazzette: The three part release plan was for the Spotify release. It gave us an opportunity to interact with our fans over a longer period of time. As for the iTunes release, we decided to put the whole thing out all at once.
Reporter: The tracks are a stunning mixture of amazing synth lines, electro, dub house, progressive, big drops and vocal genius. Please talk us through “Eject” with a few words on each of the tunes, some of which the world already holds close to their hearts…
On The Road
Cazzette: This was the song that we weirdly enough finished last. We love that we had the opportunity to work like this. Since we were putting out the release in three parts on Spotify we had until the last second before release to edit which tracks would make the cut. This was a very fun track to produce since it has that cinematic feel to it, which we love.
Beam Me Up
Cazzette: This is without a doubt the lead single from the album and we are very proud and happy of how far this track has taken us. We are really excited though to be able to show the world that we can produce other stuff than what this track represents.
Run For Cover
Cazzette: With the video and the single release of this song which happened recently, we feel that this has become even more special to us. It represents an early era of Cazzette where dub-step influences were really important. We've now kind of grown tired of the whole dub-step explosion but non the less, this song will always be something that we associate with creativity and fun.
Hit Da Face
Cazzette: This is one of our favorite songs on this album since we got to work with a really talented guy named Torn. We rarely collaborate with other artists unfortunately, but this is what can happen when we do. We still play this song in our sets today, and it still works.
Cream
We would say that this song is a really rare one since this is the only track where we actually aimed to catch a feel good vibe. We tried to make this one into a vocal version, but with the strong melodies that it contains, we never found a perfect fit.
The Rat
We always describe this song as the perfect storm. This is defiantly one of the most energetic songs we ever produced and it was really cool that we got to make something like this.
Weapon
Weapon was one of those songs where towards the end you have like 200 different mix-downs. It was actually close to a point where we nearly gave up, but once we all agreed…everything went smooth. We love how we unintentionally came up with that whole summer vibe on this one.
Endorphine
This is one of the songs that came together really quick. Sometimes as a producer when you get in a creative flow and you have no idea of why you do things, they just happen. That is the case with this song.
I Surrender
Surrender is definitely the song that we spent the most time on. We first received the amazing vocals from Niles Mason, but had a really hard time figuring out the vibe. It took us almost six months to finish this one (working on/off) and it is really one of the songs that we are most proud of. We spent so much time getting it to sound exactly as we wanted.
Downfall
It was really cool creating Downfall because it was one of those times where we got to say “ok, let’s make something entirely for the clubs”. A special memory from this song is when we played it in Mexico in front of 10,000 people at our own headline show. The energy was crazy and this track really got em' goin'
The Coming
The Coming is one of our oldest songs and actually one of the first tracks that we created together as Cazzette. It is such a playful song and for us it’s a reminder of a time where everything was really new and we were so hungry as producers – just vibing out to anything really.
Blood Theme
Dexter was awesome, that is why.
Reporter: Seb, a quote from you…“I genuinely believe Spotify is the future of music.” Please disucuss…
Cazzette: It really is the future. We live in a world where everything is streamed such as movies, music, etc. To ignore the fact that Spotify is the only music service that is resonable for today’s world makes no sense to me! Everything is so much more convenient in so many different ways when you are using Spotify. You can discover new music in a super easy way, for example if you like a certain artist you can navigate and see related artists or even create a radio station around that artist - which means that Spotify shuffles similar music for you. That is still my personal favorite thing to do on Spotify!
Reporter: What really impressed me with “Eject” is how advanced your production skills have developed in such a short time. How do YOU think your skills in the studio have progressed over the last year or so…and who excels in what area?
Cazzette: The last year has been crazy for us, especially these past few months where we have been working day and night in the studio on new material. We are really excited to show the world what we have got and compared to “Eject”, we have matured a lot. Both as producers and as people. When we created “Eject” we were just two kids listening to house and dub-step. Now we are so much more musically educated and we try to listen to as much different music as possible. That is why we are really eager to premiere our new stuff. The whole point with Cazzette for the both of us that we want to be able to put out different kinds of music. For future releases we will take that even more seriously even if “Eject”, to us, is very diverse. We always end up saying that we create all the music 50/50 since what we both add in the end, even if it’s just a hi-hat which sometimes will make the biggest difference.
Reporter: One of the hardest parts of making music is coming up with great names for the tunes. Can you recall some of the names that haven’t made it onto “Eject”!!!?!
Cazzette: Hmmm! “The Coming” was called something else before! Can’t remember what though haha…
Reporter: When was the last time you had a massive argument over music?
Cazzette: I think it is more discussions rather than arguments. We get along well, but, of course, sometimes you have different feelings about certain parts of a song. But in the end you have to remember to have respect for everyone in the creation process, because it's not only yourself who makes the music.
Reporter: Alex – do you still get freaked out by a fully soundproofed room?
Cazzette: Haha in that interview I said that I LOVED being in soundproofed rooms (i.e Studios). The person who interviewed me clearly got it wrong.
Reporter: We love the story of how your management threw you in the deep end getting you out on tour with Avicii even though you had only met each other a few times. Basically you had to learn how to DJ with each from scratch…was it easy?
Cazzette: Haha, it is pretty funny when you think about it. It was not hard to learn how the CDJs work – more how to DJ and how to please a crowd. That was insanely hard in the beggining, but now it is way easier and not that stressful like it was back then, haha!
Reporter: Who was the last GREAT up and coming DJ you saw?
Cazzette: “Sick Individuals”.
Reporter: You always give high fives and props to your manager Ash. He is always thinking of cool new marketing ideas or different ways of producing. How easy is it though to say to him “nah Ash that sucks” if you do not agree with something he suggests, or is it not that easy…?
Cazzette: It's important to disagree sometimes. It would be really weird if we agreed on everything all the time. Sometimes we disagree but it is never a big deal and we are always able to talk about it.
Reporter: Where are some of the dates in your DJ diary that you are REALLY looking forward to playing this year?
Cazzette: We are doing a massive tour soon that we are really excited about! Make sure to check www.cazzette.com for all the latest dates!
Reporter: What is on a Cazzette rider in 2014?
Cazzette: Champagne, vodka, Redbull, water!
Reporter: And finally, away from the album – what is coming out next from you guys studio wise?
Cazzette: We have tonnes of new singles and really cool production updates coming really soon! Check the site for all the latest news…
