Showtek – Dutch masters of house music!
Big Room house duo consisted of brothers Wouter and Sjoerd Janssen. These guys are one of the most influential and well-known figures in the world of hardstyle music.
The Dutch producers duo are going to present their new rework of “Cannonball (Earthquake)” that they recorded with amazing Matthew Koma.
These energetic guys all the time seeking only up…to be the BEST!
Reporter: Wouter and where in the world are you right now?
Showtek: Now we are back in the south of Holland, in our hometown Eindhoven. It feels great to be back and have some studio time…
Reporter: Looks like you had a crazy weekend, the queue in Dortmund was insane…Germany knows how to party huh?
Showtek: Yeah it was crazy. We’ve been surprised by the amount of people that have showed up at our shows over the last few months!
Reporter: I have no idea why guys, you are without flavour of the month all over the world right now! You have started the new year with the unveiling of your very own label, Skink – which is the name of a little creature belonging to the lizard family who loves the underground – how apt! Tell us about the idea behind the label…
Showtek: The label embodies the characteristics of this unlikely animal. Elusive and impossible to pin down, the skink is a survivor, making it the perfect symbol of our continuing musical evolution and determination to sustain longevity with our endeavours.
Reporter: Your tune “We Like To Party” went mental on release, what is coming out next from Skink?
Showtek: We can’t really say as of now. First of all, we really want to establish the label within the industry and then we’re going to start releasing music from up-and-coming artists in between.
Reporter: The other massive news is of course the fresh incarnation of “Cannonball (Earthquake)” coming out on March 13th. The track was an absolute anthem last year, talk us through the new rework of this dance floor monster…
Showtek: We met Matthew in LA and talked about a possible collaboration and he absolutely smashed it, so we decided to release to re-release the track because it sounds even stronger now. It would be a big waste not to re-release it, because it its brings out the full potential of the track as well.
Reporter: Something interesting you said in an interview last year when discussing “Cannonball”… “One of the best tracks for us so far was "Cannonball" which put us - in our opinion - on the next level of artistry in EDM.” Please explain that comment…
Showtek: It was the first actually and it was unexpected because the track became so huge and drew a lot of attention to us. We’ve worked hard to create our signature sound and without a signature you can never really stand out, so we’re happy we achieved that.
Reporter: 2014 it looks is a very important year for you…twelve months when you are looking to raise the bar even further. Just how ambitious are you two, are you a duo who want to be the biggest producers in the world or are you just happy being part of this massive EDM movement?
Showtek: We’re already happy that we can be part of it and work together with some of the biggest names in the EDM scene right now. As long as we can do what makes us happy, that’s the biggest way of having success.
Reporter: What are your views on the DJMag100…last year saw you re-enter the poll at No. 27…do you pay much attention to this annual lottery?
Showtek: No. It’s great to be recognized, but it’s even better to not pay too much attention to it, because it can kill the creative side of business. To us it’s still about making crazy music, but it’s still great to be in this list.
Reporter: You have some massive dates logged into your 2014 diary…where are some of the DJ gigs you are REALLY excited about?
Showtek: Finally, we are going to be spending a bit more time in Latin America, Ultra Buenos Aires and Columbia are up first and we are excited about those. In addition, we are psyched about the big festivals in Europe that we haven’t played before.
Reporter: Last summer saw you do something like 50 gigs – all major gigs. Have either you suffered burn out yet due to your exhausting schedule…?
Showtek: It was great doing so many gigs, but also really hard. We had to work out a lot to stay in shape and keep ourselves mentally stable.
Reporter: I love the list of names who were your musical influences…Faithless, Dave Clarke, Marco V, The Prodigy are all in there. Have you ever been starstruck when meeting one of your heroes?
Showtek: Starstruck is maybe a bit too much, but to meet one of your inspirational figures is always great. We always try to stay as down to earth as we can because we’re all just normal people.
Reporter: Nice answer. When was the last time you tapped a fellow DJ on his shoulder and asked him or her what the record they were playing was?
Showtek: We’d never tap someone on the shoulder; we’d just steal the USB.
Reporter: What is coming out next from you studio wise?
Showtek: We are mixing down some tracks and we’re still in consultation with what to bring to our audience first. We’re only going to release stuff that we fully support, so what’s going to be released first is gonna be big.
Reporter: We all see the fun you have on the DJ circuit having a laugh with fellow superstars. Who though are the real party animals that you know you are going to get into trouble with when you see them on the same line up?
Showtek: Sebastian Ingrosso and Sander van Doorn are guys that really know how to party and we can have fun with.
Reporter: “We don’t remix that much because it takes too much time”. A quote from you from last year. If you had some time on your hands, what is the 1 club classic you would really love to remix?
Showtek: Marco V – “Simulated”.
Reporter: Who are the non-dance music artists you are listening to at the moment?
Showtek: Young the Giant. His new album “Memory Lane” is really great and inspirational.
Reporter: What is on a Showtek rider in 2014?
Showtek: 20 bottles of champagne to sprinkle all over the crowd.
Reporter: You were once asked for some advice to give to up and coming producers. You said, “don’t duplicate, innovate”. Is this a big problem in EDM today, are too many producers just copying, jumping on bandwagons and not doing their own thing?
Showtek: Yeah. Sometimes it is horrible to hear some many people doing the same thing or trying to produce a new “Animals”. Big producers will get attention from the big crowds that dare to think outside the box.
Reporter: And finally. You work, live and tour with each other. What is each other’s best quality?
Showtek: We all work hard, do not complain much and enjoy every moment.
