Interview Carey Mulligan
Recently Cary starred as a main heroine the Coen Brothers film “Inside Davis Llewyn”. She is a young woman who only for an eight-year career has already worked with Michael Douglas, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender and Leonardo DiCaprio. Yes, she played the role of Daisy Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby” but in real life offstage, she is a very shy and does not like attend public events. She loves the stage and acting. The world press called Carry “the new Audrey Hepburn”. But she often jokes that specifically chooses dissimilar characters because she wants to be different and unexpected, so that the viewer does not have associations with a single role.
Interviewer: When you feel a craving for the acting profession?
Carey Mulligan: In childhood, we led a nomadic life. My father worked as a manager in the hospitality industry. We often traveled for years lived in different countries. Dad was a hard worker, but, despite the fatigue, in the evenings he always watching his favorite movies.
Interviewer: He probably never imagined that his daughter once nominated for “Oscar”!
Carey Mulligan: My father loved the movies, and I grew up with the dream of theater. I wanted to play on Broadway, in New York, have private dressing room with chandeliers and an apartment in one of the brick buildings with fire escapes, as in “Breakfast at Tiffany's”. Recently I realized that my dream came true. I reached all I dreamed about; including dressing room and a flat, and it impresses much stronger than a nomination for “Oscar”.
Interviewer: What role became fateful for you?
Carey Mulligan: Jenny in “Sentimental Education”. I was 21, and my character in a plot – 16. She lived in the 1960s, and it was one of the most prominent political and cultural periods in British history. Jenny was ecstatic person, loved movies and music, dreamed of going to Paris, and so she started to learn French. Unlike her, I just work and having dinner with friends. I did not go to university. I tried in 18 years, but only lost three years of life. Ashamed to think about it!
Interviewer: By the way, about shame. Can something embarrass you when you’re on the shooting?
Carey Mulligan: Sure. For example, a nude scene in the movie “Shame”. I grew up in a modest English family, where it was allowed to wear skirts below the knee, and even at home I do not go naked. Going to the premiere, I choose a dress that will bring a smile than desire. For me, clothes are not an attribute of beauty, but ‘protective armor’.
Interviewer: Last year you played just two diverse roles: country singer Gene in the film “Inside Davis Llewyn” and bohemian aristocrat Daisy in “The Great Gatsby”.
Carey Mulligan: When I learned that I would play and sing at the Cohen’s film with Justin Timberlake, I started to panic. But my husband Marcus (musician of British folk band Mumford & Sons) very supported me. And Joel and Ethan were simple and funny guys.
Interviewer: Jean, and Daisy – Americans, and you have the classic British image and accent in addition...?
Carey Mulligan: I knew that at the audition of “Gatsby” I had to compete with an Americans – Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst. In addition, unlike them I have not read the book. In English schools do not read Fitzgerald. But I'm glad that I managed through trials I could get acquainted with this amazing work. I remember after listening I painfully waiting for a call from the director. And three weeks later, I heard a clear voice of Baz Luhrmann: “Well, hello, Daisy!”
Interviewer: Did you like work with Leonardo DiCaprio?
Carey Mulligan: He's a great actor with a great sense of humor. At first I was worried: if we work well together? But after the first on-screen kiss between us reigned so light that on the set all day long sounded our laughter.
Interviewer: Did you easily entered into the image of the lady?
Carey Mulligan: Yes, it was easy. Beautiful dress and expensive jewelry make a real woman from anyone! It's like with a wedding ring – just put it on, you begin to understand clearly what will happen to you in the future.
Interviewer: And what do you need to do to have this ring? How do you personally seduce men?
Carey Mulligan: I am not a supporter of games, tricks and all sorts of strategies. I never sit in the waiting call. I am just calling to talk.
Interviewer: Do you have any hobbies, unusual hobbies, bad habits, secret vices?
Carey Mulligan: I have a passion. When I like the role, I start listening to the music, as it seems to me, would have loved my character, keeping a diary on her behalf, writing fictional stories and dialogues.
Interviewer: What does symbolize the tattoo of a seagull on your right hand?
Carey Mulligan: I did it in memory of my beloved Nina from Chekhov's “The Seagull”, which I played in 2007 in a London theater. I think this role – my greatest achievement. In each new image, I am looking for the heroine Nina, who once revealed me as an actress and person.
