DVBBS Interview
DVBBS is a Canadian electronic music duo formed in 2012 which participants are brothers Chris Andre and Alex Andre. They are also come in younger generation of successful DJs of our time! The boys most famous work was created in cooperation with Borgeous – “Tsunami”. Canada’s dance floor stars share with us the history of their sensational popular track, btothers’ connection in a studio, favourite tracks, DJs and not only…
Reporter: Alex, Chris, where in the world are you right now?
DVBBS: Hey! We are on our European tour, also known as our never ending world tour hahaha...currently in France.
Reporter: An incredible start to 2014 with what can only be described as a fucking monster of a tune, your Borgeous collaboration “Tsunami (Jump)” featuring Tinie Tempah that is finally seeing the light of day in the UK through Ministry of Sound. 30 million YouTube views, No.1 in Holland and Belgium and Radio 1 all over it. Talk us through the history of the track…
DVBBS: We moved to California early last year, Beverly Hills to be exact. Was not much furniture other than a few beds and our studio that took up most of the living room. We were producing tracks every day and writing top line vocals, bouncing them back and forth with Spinnin’ Records and a bunch of other dope producers we look up to. We always had singers, rappers, and other artist coming through and recording or just chilling in our studio. I guess the word got out and John (Borgeous) dm'd us on twitter saying that he had a dope studio and we should kick and make a banger. The rest is pretty much history. The song was released on DOORN as an ID, then premiered on BBC radio by Pete Tong. It was also very heavily supported at Tomorrowland by all the big DJ's. After its Beatport success at number 1 the song started getting a lot of Sirius XMplay and then mainstream radio. Next thing we know it’s one of the biggest songs out and Tinie is recording a verse.
Reporter: Whose idea was it to get Tinie on board?
DVBBS: Ministry of Sound and Spinnin’ told us who was interested in experimenting in some top lines on “Tsunami”, and we loved Tinie's previous work with Swedish House Mafia and thought it would be a really cool option. We also got verses from Tyga and were hoping for 2 Chainz to hop on as well. We are hip hop heads too so we loved the idea from the beginning.
Reporter: As you mentioned, this month has seen you on a whistle stop tour of Europe, France, Switzerland and The Netherlands some of the places on your radar. Tell us some of the highlights…
DVBBS: We finished a two month bus tour with our good boys Adventure Club across America and came straight to Europe at the end of December to start some European dates. We did a charity event in Holland for the 3FM serious request, helping raise money for Red Cross. We heard “Tsunami” was the top requested song that people were paying 10 euros to hear on the radio, so Spinnin’ asked us if we would surprise Holland and do a special performance at the finale. We got off the aeroplane and went straight to the square in Leuwaarden where 11 000 people went absolutely mental to “Tsunami” and millions of people tuned in. It was definitely a big trip for us. Also every show in 2014 has been sold out, which is mind blowing for us.
Reporter: Okay let us kick back for a moment. You started to show an interest in music at an early age, making beats when you were 11 years old. Who were the influences from the world of music that excited you to start the ball rolling?
DVBBS: Yes, back then we were really influenced by more rock, punk and reggae. Artists like Sublime, Blink 182, Rancid, etc. Then we started getting into electronic reggae (dub reggae) like King Tubby. We only got into the EDM stuff later. Shotwek was probably the first EDM music we heard and loved it because it was fast and aggressive like punk.
Reporter: You admit that you have an incredible connection in the studio. It seems that you really are two brothers in rhythm, talk us through what each of you bring to the table when producing – do you have your own specific skills or is there a lot of overlapping?
DVBBS: Alex is usually on the melody side and I am more on the rhythm and technical site of production. I find I loose inspiration sometimes if I am making a beat by myself. We also sing on a lot of our upcoming records.
Reporter: Who was the last brilliant up and coming DJ you saw?
DVBBS: Our homie Hunter Siegel, he's a genius behind the decks.
Reporter: Fact or fiction – in your youth you grew dreads for two years and pretended you were Bob Marley?!?
DVBBS: Haha yes we had dreads...did not really pretend to be Bob Marley or anyone else but was definitely very interested and inspired by the Rastafarian culture. Spent a lot of time in Barbados when we were kids as well.
Reporter: Biggest record in your crate right now?
DVBBS: The biggest track we are spinning is definitely “We Like To Party” by Showtek.
Reporter: We had a certain superstar DJ in the magazine recently who hails from America. He threw an interesting curve ball into the arena stating that most of the Canadians are a little pissed off with all the media attention the US EDM artists are suddenly getting as they have been smashing it north of the border for years. Thoughts on that?
DVBBS: Canada has an amazing music scene and I do not think we have any issues. Possibly, though it is hard for some Canadians to get visas to play in America. There are tons of Canadians getting recognition, I don’t really know - as long as you don't have a criminal record and have some good press to back yourself up, it is not too difficult to get a visa.
Reporter: And finally, a recent quote from you guys: “Music festivals with your best friends, drunk and watching your favorite artists and DJ's. This is about to be the best summer yet!!!!” So what festivals are you REALLY looking forward to playing at this year?
DVBBS: All of them, we're playing some legendary ones we've always dreamed about playing, but definitely hope to be at ULTRA this year and Miami for that whole week.
