I think it's about 4 or 5 years ago that I first heard of Arty, and when we ran into each other, he told me that I was the first DJ that he'd heard playing his track in my sets and radio show. I really liked his sound. The musicality of it was something very new and I could hear that his approach to engineering was also refreshingly unconventional. I met him in Russia sometime in 2010, and we talked about making music together. That's led to two tracks on the album. On 'The Ocean'. I was sent over some strings and sequence patterns, which I was really feeling. I then came back in with other elements and it turned into this big back-and-forth mechanism. Arty brought the topline, which is really harmonic and angelic. and we used it more like an instrument than a vocal - in the traditional sense, at least. We both felt very strongly about the parts that had gone in, and I then took it and began to properly produce it.
The depth of a production is a very important part of a track. It can't just rely on one super-catchy melody or incredible vocal topline. A really great track will have your ears picking up on new, 'hidden' parts months after you heard it for the first time. First your subconscious hears it, then your conscious. It's the element that'll keep you coming back time and time again. This track, though, I feel has depth AND breadth to it. It's kind of like when you're on a big mountain range or standing on the beach, looking out as something vast like the ocean. You look into the distance and your eyes are trying to take in the whole perspective. This is what this track means to me.
