EGG LDN with Laurence Malice

Egg London – is a fantastic stylish venue where you can always hear many music mixes, see best DJs, feel incredible dance atmosphere. The club has 24 hours license. Here is Official site where you can see the list of upcoming parties, a huge amount of videos and photos.

Interviewer: Looking back, what were some of your highlights of the birthday decade celebrations from the year?

Laurence: Egg's tenth was about its annual rebirth and its ability to display dance music at its highest levels. The birthday celebrations are always special as it is not my birthday or your birthday, it is for everyone that has supported the club over the years. We heard some outstanding music from artists such as Laurent Garnier, Dubfire, Danny Tenaglia & many many more. Also, we’re not ones to rest on our laurels and this year has been our most dynamic yet – a lot has changed during our tenth year!

I: What are the main reasons Egg is now recognised around the world as one of the major players?

L: Creativity, a dedicated team and loyal customers with a genuine passion for the club. Social media also plays a big part. When people go to any venue around the world they can voice their opinion to thousands of people just through pressing a couple of buttons on a computer. So, we’re ever on a mission to make the clubbing experience the best it can possibly be for each and every person.

I: What do you think was Egg’s biggest developments in 2013?

L: A complete renovation of the venue – what is Egg London today is very different from what I built here over 10 years ago. We redeveloped the dance floors increasing their size and layout dramatically, built a new roof terrace and garden at the club and installed the world's first Flipside sound system. It is a total rebirth. A venue that stands beside the best out there and the work is continuing in the new year. The project will only be completed when we are known as the best club in the world.

I: At Egg though you’ve always tried to create parties that work not just because of the DJs – fair comment?

L: It is the two sides of the coin theory. There have been clubs which made DJs who they are today and some clubs were made by the DJs themselves. Sometimes we start by planning the party as the main focus; what is the theme? What production is there going to be? Other times we build the whole night around a certain act if it feels right.

I: You of course began this fabulous clubbing adventure up in Kentish Town, throwing after hours parties in that infamous sauna. Do you ever have people come up to you who remember those steamy sessions?

L: I get people discussing the music from the Sauna club a lot, it was the first place to play hip hop in this country. Most recall the madness that surrounded the venue and the Jacuzzi that was constructed over a disused air shaft – that once ended up leaking and closing down the northern line hours! The jacuzzi should have held about 20 people, there was never less then 35 people at any one time.  We are lucky the whole thing did not collapse, with customers ending up on top of a northern line carriage.

I: Did it hurt you and your DJs at Trade when the music press unwisely started to label the club a hard house night- something it most definitely was not?

L: Yes!! Many sounds where played at trade. People like to categorise things weather it be music, clothing or even other people! What the press hung on to was one of the sounds coming out of Trade which was a faster type of house/techno. Once the music was given a name by the press the outside world latched on to it and it became very popular. DJs & producers started producing more and more tracks to keep up with a demand for the style of music, and like many music genres the tracks became weaker and weaker and the name hard house became cheapened. The original “hard house” production by the Trade residents were of quality music. Trade was and always has been a techno club that was the roots of the club, the music got faster and it slowed down. Giving the name hard house and stating the fact Trade was only a hard house club was complete rubbish. The DJs at Trade kept their secret records to themselves therefore it was difficult to categorize. Many music genres came out of Trade.

I: Clubs for me are about two experiences – “voyeurism and exhibitionism”. Discuss.

L: Exhibitionism is very important at my parties, by having true exhibitionists who could not give a damn how they express themselves by dance and attire allows us the confidence to do the same. The true exhibitionist only exists if they have an audience, the voyeur.

I: You famously once turned away Cher and Axyl Rose at Trade… Have you had any nasty celebrity encounters down at Egg?

L: I never kiss and tell.

I: You have had a long relationship with the island of Ibiza, what are your thoughts on the white isle in 2013…have the money men ruined it forever or has it still got a place in your heart?

L: There are places in Ibiza where you can get away from the world and places you can be with the world. Because it is so accessible for the people of Europe, it is a musical hub for DJs and people alike. As a result it comes with a high price tag but it's far from ruined.

I: I know you love keeping your cards close to your chest when it comes to future plans, but give us a sneak preview on new happenings at Egg in 2014…

L: You'll have to wait until the birthday in May to see the next phase of building work but in terms of artists we already have Laurent Garnier, Matthias Tanzmann, Moritz Von Oswald, Lee Foss and Frankie Knuckles, amongst others, lined up for 2014.  We will also continue to build on the success of the new Egg London podcast, which launched with Cassy in November.  It gives people the opportunity to hear our sound wherever they may be in the world which is very important to me.

I: Your new Flipside Sound System is getting so much press at the moment… You must be overjoyed how it has worked out?

L: We have been working on a custom built sound system for a while but did not want an install until we had renovated the venue. The Flipside is working fantastically well and we are looking to extend the system throughout the venue once the next phase is complete of building is complete. Feedback from DJs has been great with many saying it's one of the best systems they've ever played on.

I: Now, a quick look back at 2013… Your favourite Egg…
