Interview with MR. Roger Sanchez!

He is an international DJ, who started career in NYC from residencies in Ibiza; from digging in small clubs to performing at festival’s main stages around the world. How people like to say, this man is truly a self-made person and dance music star.

Roger always pushing himself, and others, to do better, he sums it up perfectly when he states: “I’m always moving forward, but never losing sight of where I’ve been.

So, meet Roger Sanchez with his new release – ‘UNDR THE RADR’

Reporter: Well sir, they are calling it the return of the S-Man, a return to the underground, darker side of Roger Sanchez. We have all noticed how these last couple of years you have been going back to your roots musically, why was this year the right time to resurrect the sleeping giant?

Roger Sanchez: Hey! Well I felt a change coming several years ago in dance music, a return the original sounds that were prevalent when I first started. I really felt the S-Man calling then but I wanted to take my time to regain my bearings on my sound., It's just naturally progressed to the point where I felt I was ready to bring him back.

Reporter: If a Roger Sanchez production is based around songwriting, the soulful side of things and latin rhythms – what would you say are the key factors of a classic S-Man tune…?

Roger Sanchez: The beats and basslines are the key to a classic S-Man track. The beats are very in your face and jackin and the bass is HUGE.

Reporter: A fabulous year continues for you sir with the release of your new Runnin’ EP that Pete Tong premiered on Radio 1. “When creating a new track I try to start from different points for each song and that's one of the reasons why they all sound a little bit different- but they do have common lyrics running through them.” Please talk us through the sounds of the three tunes on your new UNDR THE RADR release…

Roger Sanchez: I approached each track slightly differently but they all have a common thread which is that the bass is very prominent in each track. ‘Hold On’ features an under cover Boy George on the vocals and its all about the bass line on that tune! ‘Runnin’ is the key track that has a bit of a latin feel on the groove and a dramatic break that explodes after the drop! ‘Call 2 Me’ ft. Nalaya has a more soulful and Garage approach and Nalaya nails it with the sweetness of her voice.

Reporter: Last week saw what a lot of people are claiming to be the best ADE yet, you smashed it at Escape with your UNDR THE RADR party. Tell us about the crazy b2b2b session…who stole the show?

Roger Sanchez: It is hard to say who stole the show since everyone was on form but the b2b2b2b section when we ALL jumped on and Nalaya adlibbed over it was pretty special.

Reporter: How important is ADE now on the dance calendar now, it’s on a completely different tip from IMS, Miami, BPM etc.?

Roger Sanchez: ADE is quite likely the most important dance music conference at the moment as it is still focused around business, but now the events have really taken off and multiplied exponentially.

Reporter: It was the annual DJ Top100 Poll a couple of weeks ago, yet again the contest has come in for criticism for various reasons, one being how the people being ‘voted’ for are primarily producers and not a DJ as we know it. As you once said, “the whole DJ thing has been flipped on its head by everything is now focused on DJs becoming recognized as artists”. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Roger Sanchez: I believe that the Poll has really become a bit of an online "beauty contest" complete with vote/for/me ads and campaigns. it isn’t as focused on who is killing it at club level as it us4ed to be and producers definitely occupy most of the limelight. I'm not sure how accurate it really is but it DOES give an indication as to who is very visible at the moment.

Reporter: If there was a poll for the best turned out DJ/Producer in the world, the –S-Man would win every year dude!! You admitted once “It’s OK to be a bit of a pin up boy sometimes, I love clothes, I love design.” Who are your favourite designers at the moment and also who are some of the icons out there you respect for the way they take care of their appearance?

Roger Sanchez: I love Julius and Knomadik for comfort with an edge as well as Y3. I think Richie Hawtin and Tiga seem to always look on point...it must be all the trips to the Berlin Everything Black boutiques that keep them looking fresh!

Reporter: In that same interview you also stated that you “can speak slang with the best of them”. So Mr Sanchez, when was the last time you headed off to some down and dirty bar with your crew and got messed up??!?

Roger Sanchez: Lately I haven't had time to hang since I'm either with the family, on tour or on studio lockdown. But this past summer I kicked it in Ibiza with my crew and heads like Oliver $ and Jesse Rose and had quite a laugh.

Reporter: Ah Ibiza, I have lost count of the amount of times that I have danced ‘til dawn to your sweet house music in Ibiza. This year you took up residence at Pacha’s seafront millionaires cabaret Lio venue overlooking Dalt Villa for some Monday night soirees. How was that for you this summer?

Roger Sanchez: That was cool as a bit of a VIP after dinner party and I had some mates down to play with and hang. I preferred the b2b with Huxley at Pacha to be honest.

Reporter: Next month sees you return to one of your favourite dicotheques in the world, The Ministry of Sound in London town on Saturday November 15th. An iconic venue for an iconic music controller! What keeps pulling you back to Ministry?

Roger Sanchez: I love the sound system and that fact the Box says what it is..a no nonsense, four walls sick sound system Box to sweat in and lose it!

Reporter: What are the 3 biggest tunes in your box this weekend?

Roger Sanchez: ’Call 2 Me’, ‘Runnin’, ‘Hold On’...of course!

Reporter: You are one of the few old skool DJs who admits to relishing this new wave of dance music. In your own words…“It’s almost like a new beginning but with the benefit of having lived through what I have with dance music. I get a chance to have participated the first time around, but also be part of this new generation, so I’m really looking forward to it.” They my friend are the words of a guy with his head screwed on correctly! Who are some the fresh new producers who are exciting you at the moment?

Roger Sanchez: I'm collaborating with a few of them...Oliver $, Huxley, Man Without A Clue, Sabb…I also am into what Stacey Pullen and Mr G are up to at the moment.

Reporter: You have collaborated with some musical geniuses over the years. Who though out there that has so far eluded your grasp would you love to spend a day in the studio with? A singer, a producer…?

Roger Sanchez: I would love to do something with Bjork or Sade…those two are my all time elusive vocalists to work with.

Reporter: You are the perfect person to comment on the flourishing scene in your home country right now. What was once an EMD greedy mob is now thankfully discovering new dance sounds and emerging themselves in different beats. You spin in the US all the time, how has it been watching it all unfold over the pond?

Roger Sanchez: It’s great to see the way House has crept up on the radio and collective dance music consciousness. I can't wait to see how 2015 unfolds!

Reporter: Tune of 2014?

Roger Sanchez: For me, my collab with Huxley ‘Callin’.

Reporter: And finally, what is coming out next from your studio and also label wise in the near future?

Roger Sanchez: I'm just finishing a new remix of my very first S-Man track ‘Time 2 Stop’ and several collabs coming soon!
